I am definitely a fan of MTV’s show Teen Wolf. I am also a rabid fangirl when it comes to Sterek (the fandom ship of Stiles Stilinski and Derek Hale, for those not in the fandom). However, I’m a little bit worried that the fandom is getting it’s hopes a little too high up over that ship becoming canon.
I think people are maybe putting a little too much stock in the fact that Jeff Davis said that he could be convinced to write it into the show, even though he’d originally had no plans for it. I know a lot of people (including myself) really want Sterek to be canon and are really hoping for it, but I just don’t think it’s going to happen.
My hypothesis about it is this. Jeff Davis was asked on Twitter if Sterek was going to be canon, or what he thought about Sterek or something like that. He said it would have to stay in the realm of fanfiction. ALL of the Sterek fans then promptly fell down on top of his head. I don’t think he realized that saying a pairing wasn’t going to ever make it into the canon was going to cause that much of a stir. Was going to cause that much of an issue. And maybe he even underestimated the amount of Sterek fans out there.
So…I think he went into damage control. He maintained that he had no plans to add Sterek into the show, but he gave us a bone and said that he could be convinced. This way, he gives himself an out. Not only does he give us a bone, but if it never makes it into the canon he can easily just say that he simply wasn’t convinced. This way, it puts the burden onto the fans to make sure it happens and if it doesn’t, well it’s our own fault. He’s off the hook, and the show doesn’t lose a ton of fans.
I also think that at some point he realized that the sheer volume of Sterek fans out there was a good resource to utilize for spreading information about Teen Wolf and that if he keeps throwing us little bones and humoring us, and having the cast humor us, then we’ll stick around and we won’t cause a whole lot of trouble. As long as we think that there’s a chance we’re going to get what we want, we’re placated enough that it’s not a big deal.
I really don’t think he set out to do that, and I don’t think Jeff Davis is a bad guy. But, he is a show creator, a show writer, and for all intents and purposes he’s sort of a businessman. He knows how many of us there are now, or at least that there are a whole damn lot of us, and he knows that we can get things moving, if we’re motivated.
We’re given little consolation prizes every now and then, like the Hobrien blooper reel. But, it’s not the same as a sign that things are going our way. It’s just another bone, another consolation prize.
I don’t think there are any plans whatsoever to add actual Sterek into the show. I don’t think there ever will be. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if season 3 brings us a female love interest for Derek Hale who might not be gone at the end of the season, who might stay on into season 4 if Teen Wolf is picked up again. Maybe even for the rest of the show. I wouldn’t be too surprised if Stiles also gets some action from a female love interest.
It would be GREAT if it did happen, if Sterek was made into canon. It would make my lifetime. Srsly. And I think this show could easily, successfully, and realistically pull it off. I think it’s MORE than time that something like this happens in a show like Teen Wolf. Something for teens and young adults, and something that has it’s time slot and there’s no reason MTV couldn’t do it. It’s MTV for crying out loud.
But, I don’t think it’s going to. I would be shocked (pleasantly, though!) if it did happen. Because, while everybody else thinks all signs point to Go, I’m seeing all signs pointing to Slow: Proceed with Caution, or in some cases even STOP.
And while the cast members Dylan O’Brien and Tyler Hoechlin have said they wouldn’t be put off by a romantic story line between their characters, and they obviously play it up a little bit for the fans, I don’t think that even THEY think it’s a possibility. News got around not too long ago about Hoechlin asking (often, apparently) Jeff Davis when Derek was going to get a female love interest.
One might think that since he has to ask, maybe Sterek is still a possible Go, but I think the fact that he’s asking at all is a sign that even the actors don’t think there’s any likelihood that a Sterek relationship is going to happen in the canon.
It really is going to have to stay in fanfiction and fanart. In fandom. Jeff Davis’s first reaction was and is his final reaction to the question. It never changed, and he has no intention of being swayed. He felt like he was pushed into a corner and had to say something to mitigate the damage and turn it around, so he said what he had to say.
That’s not to say that I don’t support The Sterek Campaign, or that I think we should all just give up on it. I just think we shouldn’t be so sure of ourselves that it’s going to happen. People’s minds CAN be changed, even when they were adamant that they weren’t going to change their mind. But, it’s not something to bet on. It’s something to work toward, but with a healthy dose of awareness that it might be all for naught.
